By Bus Bus is one of the easiest ways to travel around Jiangsu. The major cities are connected by a network of new, modern freeways and highways. Each city has one or two major bus terminals, with digital schedules - so even if you don't speak Chinese, its easy to find out what time buses leave. Buses between major cities generally leave every half hour or |
hour, so there are usually plenty of seats if you go directly to the station. The buses themselves are quite comfortable - large coaches, with air-conditioning and cushioned seats. Fares are reasonable - usually between 30 and 60 RMB, depending on the distance and the speed of the bus. Buses are also a quick way to move between cities - its only around 3 hours from Nanjing to Suzhou by bus, and an hour or two between most other cities.
By train Train is another convenient way to get around the province, and also to the rest of China. One of China's main rail lines runs from Shanghai along the Yangzi River, passing through Suzhou, Wuxi, Changzhou, Zhenjiang, and Nanjing before turning up towards Xuzhou. Since so many trains pass along this trunk line, trains run all day long and into the night as well. This means tickets are easy to come by at whatever time of day you plan on traveling. Train tickets are quite inexpensive, and are reasonably comfortable - heated in winter, air conditioned in winter, with soft cushioned seats, refreshments, and a dining car. If you plan on traveling from Jiangsu to other places in China, Nanjing is a good place to buy sleeper train tickets.
By boat There are a few boat routes still operating in Jiangsu. Perhaps the most convenient and popular is the regular boat which runs between the water towns of Zhouzhuang and Tongli. Winding through the old canals of the Yangzi Delta, it takes less than an hour to travel between the two towns, and is a great experience, evoking the days when canal boats bustled between the watertowns. An overnight boat runs between Hangzhou and Suzhou, and costs 50 RMB. Although its not a luxury boat, it arrives in Hangzhou or Suzhou in the next morning, giving you a full day of sightseeing. If you're interested, travel agencies sometimes organize boat based tours of Jiangsu - many of the most famous towns lie along the canals and rivers, and the travel agencies arrange more comfortable cruising boats. | |
